At Sharky Shenanigans, we believe Earth Day isn’t just a one-day party — it’s a year-long adventure! In a high school marine science classroom, every day can be Earth Day when we mix mindfulness, action, and a little salty sea spirit.
Here’s how we’re making waves for the planet — with a special shoutout to the awesome volunteer opportunities right here in Manatee County!
Mindfulness Matters: Being Present for the Planet
Earth Day reminds us that small choices add up — just like tiny plankton make a whale-sized meal.
In the classroom, mindfulness looks like:

- Think Before You Print: Keep things digital or print double-sided when needed.
- Choose Ocean-Friendly Supplies: Reusable water bottles, refillable markers, and glass containers can all make a difference.
- Clean-Up Challenges: After any lab or project, do a “Clean Sweep” to make sure everything’s tidied up and nothing ends up harming our marine buddies.
Take Action: Volunteer Kayak Cleanups with Manatee County
One of the coolest ways to protect our waterways? Paddle out and clean them up!
Manatee County’s Natural Resources Department regularly hosts Volunteer Kayak Cleanups, where students and community members paddle local rivers, mangroves, and estuaries while picking up litter. It’s an epic way to:
- Get hands-on with conservation
- Explore hidden natural areas like Mangrove tunnels and seagrass beds
- Work alongside county representatives and real environmental scientists
- Log volunteer hours for Bright Futures scholarships or graduation requirements

Tip: Turn a volunteer event into a class field trip or bonus project! Students can write reflections or share what surprising items they found. Spoiler: it’s usually weirder than you think, for example: boat fender, captain’s hat, social security card were all found on various clean up’s we did.
More Volunteer Adventures
Beyond kayaking, there are so many ways to get involved:

- Coastal Cleanups: Join beach sweeps at your local shorelines or waterways that help keep trash from ending up in the ocean
- Habitat Restoration: Help plant marsh grasses, sea oats, or remove invasive species from sensitive areas.
- Educational Programs: Volunteer to assist with public education days, like World Oceans Day or National Estuaries Day.
- Wildlife Monitoring: Some programs even allow trained volunteers to help monitor shorebirds, manatees, and sea turtle nests!
Tip: Post a “Volunteer Opportunities” board in your classroom so students can pick adventures that fit their passions — and rack up community service hours! You can even give incentives for participating in these activities like extra credit or a party!
Modeling Mindfulness As a Teacher
Students will follow your lead. Let’s show them how real ocean advocates roll:

- Share your own volunteer experiences (photos of muddy boots or soggy gloves encouraged!).
- Bring a reusable water bottle to every field event and brag about your “Zero-Waste” status.
- Reflect out loud: Talk about why protecting local waterways matters — and how it connects to global ocean health.
Tip: Create a “Mindful Marine Moments” journal where students reflect weekly on one small way they helped the ocean or the Earth during their week, this can be as small as recycling a can or as big as starting a whole eco-project
Earth Day Is Just the Beginning
In the Sharky Shenanigans world, Earth Day is just a part of our every day life. With hands-on action like volunteer kayak cleanups, beach sweeps, and citizen science, we turn ocean love into ocean action every day.
Let’s dive in — together — one paddle stroke, one piece of trash, and one mindful moment at a time.
