Welcome to Sharky Shenanigans! Here we explore ways to bring experiential learning into the classroom, keeping up on the latest marine science news and hot takes, and enjoying some of the fun things we have going on in the class! This site is made for educators, ocean lovers, shark lovers, and students alike!
On the Blog, you can read through some of the updates and experiences we have had in the past from things as small as building plankton models to as large as the influences we have had over the years as women in STEM. The blog is not always directly education and classroom related, but sometimes looks at taking what is happening in the world of marine science and making it so it is easy for everyone to view and enjoy. We focus on updates in the classroom as well as real world events meant to be read in a way that everyone can understand what’s going on in the world of marine science without necessarily needing a scientific background in it to do so.
Shark Tagging 101 is a page dedicated to our shark tagging lab that has been updated and worked on since 2018. Shark Tagging is an activity that few people get the hands-on experience doing, so this lab was designed to bring that idea to the classroom. Check here for updates on the lab and when it will become available for others to utilize and try out.
Blue Planet Bytes is bite-sized information about marine life in cute packaging. Need a small poster for labelling groups? Just want fun information about a variety of animals from our amazing ocean? Check out this tab for art drawn by Savanna and fun facts about each organism. Future artwork will also be posted here, so check back soon!
On our Estuary Ambassadors page, you can find information on the estuary tank that has taken over our classroom. This project stemmed from a pleasant backdrop for the front desk to a study that looks at how students see their local ecosystems by having local fish in the classroom. You can find our presentation on the project on this page as well as example framework documents on how you can start an estuary tank in your classroom!
If you would like to know more about Savanna or how to drop her a line, check out the About Savanna page to learn about her background in Marine Biology, backstory in the world of ocean lovers, education background, and current goals. Make sure to view her contact information and send a shout out on social or via email!
Sharky Shenanigans was created to get some of the fun and unique things we do in the classroom out into the world. As this site grows and develops, we will be adding a place for lesson plans to be shared and labs to be viewed. We strongly encourage collaboration and appreciate any feedback along the way. We have several projects we are working on that could use some extra teacher love!
